For a good mix, use equal parts garden soil, compost, and coarse material like perlite or coarse sand. This provides nutrients, structure, and drainage. For containers, just use a high-quality potting mix labeled for vegetables—it's already perfectly balanced.

Stick with a well-draining potting mix for containers or raised beds. If planting in-ground, mix generous compost into your native soil. The best "kind" is alive with organic matter! Avoid heavy, clumpy soils or sterile "topsoil" from bags.

Just like vegetables need the right oil to cook well, plants need the right soil to grow well. Use a well-draining potting mix for containers or raised beds. If you’re planting in the ground, mix plenty of compost into your native soil. The best soil is alive with organic matter—avoid heavy, clumpy soils or sterile bagged “topsoil.”
