if you want to go with the no-till method, how do you usually go about planting a tree? just dig a small hole or what?

We've dug a hole, bigger than the pot to make room. Then we fill in the rest with soil.

Yes, you still dig a hole, but only as deep and wide as the tree's root ball. The core no-till principle is to disturb the surrounding soil as little as possible. After planting, smother the area around the tree with a thick compost/mulch layer instead of tilling.
